Roll-Over
This photo was taken at the Western end of Porlock Shingle Ridge, Somerset.
The fact that the tree, at least a hundred years old, has been subsumed by the shingle ridge is clear evidence of the fact that inland progression is real.
It has been growing in a deep layer of soliflucted soil on a gently sloping piece of land at the Northern edge of Exmoor. It still receives a plentiful supply of fresh water, via throughflow. It seems able to withstand the onslaught of a few storms each year and the saline sea water which drenches the whole tree.
