Download the CMIAR application, together with example data and image files
Version 2.3
System Requirements
Microsoft Windows: Any version from Windows 98 onwards
Minimum screen display 800 x 600 pixels
5 MB disk space on C: drive

Read all instructions before clicking on Download
You may wish to print these instructions and prepare your Computer.
This installation is a little less automatic than some, but it allows users to be quite sure where their data files are going to be placed.
It also allows installation on all versions of Windows back to Windows 98.

On your Computer make a new directory (folder) in C:\Program Files entitled CoastalResearch
Then make a further sub directory in C:\Program Files\CoastalResearch entitled MIA
Then make a further sub directory in C:\Program Files\CoastalResearch\MIA entitled B523

Ensure you have a temporary directory, e.g. C:\Temp\MIAdown

Decide how you wish to arrange your CMIAR data and image files.

Suggestions can be found in DATA DIRECTORY SUGGESTIONS

Make a note of your chosen directory (folder) locations.

Go back to the cmiar.co.uk web site
Select the DOWNLOAD page again,

Click Here to Download the Zip File CMIAR-23.zip File size should be 2008 KB.

A window will appear, asking you to 'Open' or 'Save' or 'Cancel'
Click on 'Save'
A window will then appear with your Computer directories,
Select the temporary directory, e.g. C:\Temp\MIAdown
A zip file with filename CMIAR-23.zip will appear in your temporary directory after a few minutes, much less if using a high speed internet connection. See below if any difficulty experienced.
Double click on CMIAR-23.zip, it will then extract all its files.
At this point Select All files and run your Anti-Virus software on them. This should be standard practice for all downloads.
Double click the file SETUP.EXE file
A large blue screen will appear; follow instructions; particularly the one asking you to select a directory:
Select the previously created Directory to install CMIAR
    Suggestion: C:\Program Files\CoastalResearch\MIA\B523,

You should have 5 files installed:
    CMIAR-23.exe
    NO018227.mia (Example Data File)
    AAAADBAJ.jpg (Example Image File)
    AAAADBAP.jpg (Example Image File)
ST5UNST.LOG - do not move or delete this text file

Select CMIAR-23.exe with one click only - Click on Menu: File > Virus Check
If virus report OK, then click on: File > Create Short Cut
Drag shortcut to your desk top.
Move NO018227.mia to your preferred Data Directory (this is a larger version of the Noname Clan Archive, and demonstrates distribution plots on the new maps).
Move the two .jpg files to your preferred Image Directory (If you downloaded an earlier version of CMIAR these two images are the same as the earlier images)

You can now start CMIAR by clicking on the desktop icon

When you get to the CMIAR main window, study the layout and read the messages that appear as you pass your mouse pointer over the various Data Box Descriptions.
Go to menu File > Open ... select the NO018227.mia File

After you have run CMIAR once you can improve the way that CMIAR starts looking for Archive Files by finding WHEREFIL.txt in:
    C:\Program Files\CoastalResearch\MIA\B523
Open this file in 'Notepad' and edit the first line - instructions are in the file. There is also a Help Page within CMIAR which explains how you can also edit SEPARATE.txt if you wish to use a different directory for image files. You can't cause a problem here because if you type in a directory that doesn't exist the file(s) rewrite themselves back to the default directory which is C:\ (the root directory in Windows).

Archive Editors who continue adding records and editing records using CMIAR version 2.3 are advised NOT to return to a 2.2 version to do more editing. Once you move up to version 2.3, stick with it. This is because version 2.3 stores slightly more data for each record than version 2.2. Browsers reading Archive files need not concern themsleves at all; they can read Archives in version 2.3 or earlier and will not notice any data loss.
Version 2.3 has many additional features for searching and examining data.

Problems with downloading
CMIAR software has been successfully downloaded to all major Microsoft operating systems, XP onwards. However, some computers have experienced a truncated download. This where less than the full file size has been received but the computer reports that download is complete. Comments and advice on this phenomena can be found by typing truncated download into a search engine.
The reason will also depend on the local configuration of the receiving computer, e.g. security settings, anti-virus type and settings.
To assist users with checking if they received a complete download the full file size is printed above. If this is the same as the received file size, displayed by the computer, then the software will run correctly. If the file size is less than the printed file size - typically 60% - then repeating the download may often resolve the problem.
